What or Who is God, and what is He perceived to be and how can we learn to love Him ?

To understand who or what God really is, is almost impossible. From a scientific view, he is perceived to be a celestial living body of energy, of unknown origin, size and shape, possessing unlimited knowledge and boundless power.

The most understandable and common perception or belief is that God is a living celestial supreme being that is immortal and ageless, has emotions and a limitless intellect; possesses an infinite amount of knowledge, and that He is the creator and ruler of the known universe and the architect of all life forms; generates warmth, love and life giving energy, and is the source of all moral authority.

God is omnipresent, His life force: {sometimes referred to as the “Spiritual Holy Ghost”} dwells within all Beings, all Life Forms, throughout the infinite cosmos.

It is also believed, that God is the ruler over the infinite cosmos and the creator of an unseen and undetectable celestial, multi-dimensional universe, and that it is populated with celestial angelic beings, and other terrestrial, extra-terrestrial, astrophysical, and inner-dimensional life forms.

God

Jesus stated in (Matthew 22:37) that the greatest moral commandment on Earth is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”. For mankind, this poses an interesting challenge.

First lets try to understand what love is or means.

Love is clearly an emotional feeling of interpersonal attraction and affection. Love can be felt in the physical human body as well as in the mind and soul of a person (three distinct different segments of a human being).

Lets try to understand how a man’s or woman’s love emotions function.

There has to be three key events that must happen for love to be possible, awareness, contact and interaction. A human being cannot love something that they have no awareness of, and they cannot love something if there is no contact or interaction.

The awareness comes first, the contact comes second, and then usually followed by interaction. Somewhere during these three steps, love can occur.

Also Love has various categories, types and depths. First lets look at the categories, there are three:

Eternal Life
  • Love felt in the physical body or heart

  • Love felt in the soul, your emotions

  • Love felt in the mind, your thoughts and understanding

Next the Types of Love, and there are four:
  • Instant Love

  • Developed Love

  • Temporary Love

  • Permanent or boundless love

And last the depths of love, there are four:
  • Shallow or Responsive love (something associated with lust or greed), this is usually a highly conditional temporary love.

  • Conditional or Manipulated love (someone or something that you feel you have a responsibility to love, because who they are, what they do or have done) this is usually a developed love, but not necessarily permanent.

  • Conditional Strong love (someone or something that you developed an attraction for over a period of time which evolved into love). This is usually a permanent love and can grow into unconditional love; it can, however, erode if certain actions and conditions occur.

  • Unconditional Euphoric Love (someone or something that you had an imitate level of attraction and love for, and over a period time, it just kept growing in strength no matter what conditions occurred). This is most always a permanent and boundless love.

Love is usually directed towards another person or animal, but can also be directed towards an activity or a material possession.

So now that we understand the basic structure of what love is, how do we follow Jesus' recommendation, to Love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind?

I do not want to take a pessimistic view, but for some people this is just not going to be possible, and sadly for others its possible but its unlikely they will every become motivated to do it, and for others its also possible and they want to do it, but they just do not know how to do it. (Luke: 8, 5 through 15).

God's Love

Fortunately there are some people that do understand how to love God in this manner and those people usually possess an abundance of spiritual wisdom and are filled with gratitude, kindness, righteousness, humility and focus their thoughts on God before everything else.

How many people in your life have you met that are like that? If you can count them up to the number of fingers on your hands, it would be close to a miracle.

Now lets consider how to learn to love God in the matter Jesus recommended.

The very first and most important part of being able to love God is awareness. A person must become aware of God, who He is, where He exists, the things He does and what His character is like.

Unless a person has awareness of these things, they can never come to love God. Also its important to realize that God and Jesus Christ are one.

A lot of people will think or say, I believe in God and have love for Him; and in most cases that is like saying you have a lottery ticket in your pocket, you love having that ticket, you believe you are going to win and you will love spending all that money and enjoy all the things it can get for you.

Even if a person believes in God, that does not mean they have love for Him.

The truth is a person cannot love God unless they take the time in life to seek Him out and become aware of His presence.

To do this, a person must regularly pray and study His words. When praying, speak to God in private, use a low, gentle toned voice and speak to Him as if He were another person standing in front of you.

When praying, tell God that you want to learn to love Him and to reveal Himself to you. Ask for His direction and guidance in your life and give thanks for all the unseen things He does for you every day. Remember that God gave you your body, mind, soul and your life.

When studying His Words, try to do it in private so any distractions can be kept to a minimum.

My advice is to take the time to read and study the entire Bible and Quran. Don’t have any concern if you do not understand some of the words or passages, just keep reading the entire text of both books. Some people may prefer to listen to audio rather than read or do a combination of both. What will happen is that God will reveal to a person what’s important for them to know and they will come to understand it.

Eternial Life

You will find that comparing the words and passages between the Bible and Quran are truly invaluable.

Many people come to know God’s presence by studying his Son, Jesus Christ, by reading or listening to every spoken or written word that came from Jesus or if they are of Muslim faith, that come from Muhammad.

For most people, its easier to focus on a deity through a visualized human character.

When studying God’s words, its important to try and visualize Him in your mind and when you’re not studying His words, keep that visualization in your thoughts. If you want to visualize Him as a burning bush, a mass of glowing energy, a bright light or human in appearance, just accept what formulates in your mind and keep that in your thoughts.

You might want to consider viewing our Perceptions of God Gallery at the top of this webpage, usually, one of those images will appeal to you and stick with you, or in some cases, God will reveal his image in your mind.

Loving God

After a person discovers God’s presence, they will start to become familiar with His character, and how He thinks and feels. This will have a major impact on their life and usually will cause them to change some of their activities, routines and habits.

Once that starts to occur, then they are feeling and building love for God.

Please note however, this does not happen instantly, it takes time, weeks, months or sometimes years, but eventually they will come to be aware of His presents. They will feel it and there will be no doubt what-so-ever about it.

Shortly after they’ve discovered His presence, they will become acutely aware that God's living spirit dwells within their human body and within their mind and soul.

From that point on, daily contact and interaction begins to take place, the person’s spiritual knowledge and wisdom starts to grow and they soon begin to realize all the wonderful things that God does in their life, as well as in the lives of people they love.

They become familiar with God’s character and have an understanding of how He thinks and feels. This will cause their character to change, they will become a much wiser and stronger willed person and also, they will become more kind, compassionate, more humble in nature and much more able to resist harmful carnal temptations.

Then as each day passes their love for God will grow and soon they will love God with all their heart and with all their soul and with all their mind.

May the grace of God be upon you always --- Amen.

Sincerely,
